"When the Wind Blew"

This post is a little different than my usual posts. There's a little story behind the images today. I was at a park on the Huron River several days ago. I was shooting flowers, landscapes and some abstract hopefuls! Even though it was a tad more windy than I would have liked for shooting flowers, the clouds were great and it felt wonderful outside.
I had just taken a shot of one area of the river that had some nice cloud reflections on it when a gust of wind came up and blew one of my lens covers and filters out of my hand and into the water. It landed on some river grasses, that wouldn't normally be showing, but because of the lower water from this years drought they happened to be near the surface. So there I was, really wanting to get back my lens cover and filter, but couldn't get to it. I took a quick shot of it just to say good bye.
Well, as it turned out I just couldn't say good bye. I ran over to someone fishing, to borrow his net, but it turned out not to be long enough to even get close to it. I motioned to people in kayaks and canoes to come over to see if they could help, but no one came.
Then all of a sudden several people decided to try to help. The two that took the most active part were a couple that happened to be walking in the park. Lou, and Emily. I wish I had taken a photo of them, but alas I didn't. Maybe someday I'll see them again though, as we did exchange e mails. We were trying to figure out how to get my soaking wet cap etc. out of the water when all of a sudden a young man by the name of Michael came quickly gliding in a canoe out from under the bridge we were all on.
We yelled for help, and he quickly responded and was very eager and determined to retrieve the floating object from the water. Winds were strong, which made for some pretty hard work, but he wasn't about to give up!
This was Michael battling against the winds on his first go round. He kept saying "I can do it"!
This was the second and successful go round as he headed for the water logged cap and filter. I am so grateful for the kindness of everyone that came to my aid that day. Michael was the hero of the day, but Emily, and Lou played a major part and stayed with me for quite a while.
It certainly does the soul good to know that there are wonderful people out there. People who will come to the aid of a total stranger.
Many many thanks to Lou, Emily, Michael, and all the others that came and went during that time, trying to help out!
This last shot is one of the bridge. It was taken before this all happened, but it's where it all happened!
I hope you've enjoyed this post! I know I enjoyed writing about it! :)

  1. Great story Rachel about the kindness of others. I had a similar situation a couple of weeks ago. I was shooting at a sunflower farm and dropped my lens cap to my feet below. No water just weeds. Despite looking for 15 minutes and having other photographers look, I never found it. Hard to believe. That is why I always carry a backup lens cap.

Love the cloud reflections in the first image.
